Gravity Stool

In dialogue with a natural phenomenon.

The Gravity Stool was created with the use of the Gravity Tool, a machine existing out of large magnets that are pulled upwards by two weights. By pulling up the magnets new shapes and structures emerge. The opposite position of the magnetic fields in the machine has largely determined the final shape of the Gravity Stool. The works are characterized by the unpredictable shapes that are so typical of nature itself.

Through the Gravity Tool and the two-component plastics – developed especially for this purpose – Van der Wiel was able produce a small collection of objects ranging from his Gravity Stools to custom orders and collaborations with other designers and architects.

Original Gravity Stool is the first version of the Gravity Stool series, produced in 2011. Gravity Stool is another variation produced in 2012.
