Tropics in Amsterdam

Paradise birds nest in the Vondelpark, lianas overgrowing the Beurs van Berlage and palms are towering along the Amstel. What if Amsterdam would be tropical? In a new conceptual experiment, designer Jólan van der Wiel searches for fitting shapes, techniques and materials to design the city of the tropics.

JVDW is currently researching various characteristics of tropical forests in the collections Botanical Gardens and the Tropical Museum in Amsterdam. The studio is translating these features into various designs for furniture, lighting and interiors. As a source of inspiration, JVDW uses bright colours, prickly skin and camouflage of fruit and insects, used to protect themselves.

In the upcoming months, we will publish new tropical experiments, collaborations and objects on this section of the website.
